Arlington National Cemetery
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008The weather is VERY Hot…but when our bus brought us into “The Avenue of Hero’s” leading into Arlington, I got chills. The Arlington National Cemetery is located in Arlington Virginia…so we took the ‘Hop on Hop Off’ bus tours to get around . The Trace Adkins song really chokes you up, even more, after you see the ‘Sea of Tombstones’ of our Fallen Heros.
It is 224 acres long and has 300,000 people buried there. Veterans and military casualties from every one of the nation’s wars are interred in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In section 27, there are more than 3,800 former slaves. The Department of the Army manages the cemetery. Funerals average about 20 a day. The cemetery helps family members remember loved ones that have died trying to help our country.
…”And I’m proud to be on this peaceful piece of property”…
…”I’m on scared ground and I’m in the best of company”…
…I’m thankful for those thankful for the things I’ve done…
…I can rest in peace, I’m one of the chosen ones…
…”I made it to Arlington” - Arlington/Trace Adkins.
Men and women who have died in operation Iraqi freedom, and the tragedy of the Columbia, which crashed in Houston, Texas on February 4, 2003, are also buried there.
